… that table tennis is not a summer sport? It is indeed!

Because:

… On 26 June in Subotica civil organizations, and those institutions that have programmes related to addiction prevention, commemorated the International Day Against Drug Abuse with an open-air public event. The event was organized on the main square of the town in front of the Town Hall. Club 21 – Association for Positive Communication participated in the event with the usual ingenious way: it set up an open-air “night sport club” on the spot, in the framework of which the “moonlight” kids, the staff members of the American Corner Moonlight and the students of the Hungarian Teacher Training Faculty of Subotica put on a sport performance in 40 minutes with the title “They Chose Death” as a memorial to renowned musicians who died of various addictions. This autumn we are going to repeat the performance in an even more improved form in the Art Cinema of Subotica. We also carried off a prize in the placard competition held on the occasion of the event. The project was group work, but Áron Lálity was chosen to receive the prize as the leader of the project. The youngsters of the six Moonlight Clubs of Subotica also conducted a unique and practical attitude survey among the spectators and the passers-by. The tools of the survey were soft drinks served in jugs, the health poster of Club 21, 200 “health” cups and 200 “poison” cups. Those surveyed could have free drinks in either of the two types of cups offered, from which they could choose freely. The results of this practical survey were the following: all “health” cups were used up, while the “poison” cups were chosen by 34 persons, with the reservation that the illustrations on the cups were designed by a psychologist and an artist, and the “poison” cup had a highly attractive appearance. The sample of the survey is not representative. Or is it after all?

The Women’s Club operating in the framework of the Radonovac Municipality (part of the Subotica Municipality) organized eventful summer programmes for the children who spend their holiday at home. The programmes included dance, chess and drama school, art group, visits to the museum and the zoo, football matches, and table tennis in the Summer Moonlight Club – this latter thanks to the Moonlight Clubs of Subotica. The table tennis games were held with the coaching of brothers Tivadar and Viktor Juhász, eminent players of the Spartacus Table Tennis Club of Subotica, who have achieved serious results not only in Subotica, but also on national level, and who accepted this summer activity voluntarily. The beginning of the first day was quite amusing. 10 youngsters came together from the neighbourhood. We had a ping-pong table and bats too, but … no net. For a moment it occurred to me that the bottle we used for collecting plastic bottle cups would make a good substitute for the net, but Mr. Kiss, Tivadar and Viktor soon put together the perfect net from the various “ingredients” found on the site. What were these? Two porcelain cups, two glasses and a metal curtain rod. The sight cannot be described with words, it must be seen (photos). All’s well that ends well, but after this I (Mrs. Sefcsity) made sure that on the following days we had a real net, and the children could play on a “traditional” table – and in the way they learned it from the Juhász brothers.
