COMMEMORATION
CONTEST IN SZENTENDRE
IN 1956 MINUTES
28 November, 2006
This
morning the day began the same way as
usual. Primary and secondary school students were hurrying towards
the school. So was our small Moonlight Club team too, which I was
also a member of, although we were not heading towards our usual
classrooms, and our rucksacks were not heavy from books and
exercise books, much more from ping-pong bats, drinks and snacks.
We were waiting in front of the Technical Secondary School of
Subotica for the microbus which took us to the meeting of night
sport clubs organized in Szentendre.
At
the departure we were
in very high spirits. Dezső Kiss who accompanied us told us what
the “rules of the game” were to be followed on the
way. In a few hours we arrived in Budapest. First we stopped at
the Heroes’ Square, where we had about one hour free time
too. Then we went up to the Citadel. We couldn’t take our
eyes off the view as the whole Budapest was outlined in front of
us. We could both see and feel the hum of the city.
We
also had enough time left to visit the Danube Shopping Centre,
where we played a lot in the amusement arcade, all the expenses of
which were paid by Zoli, the husband of Mr Kiss’s daughter
living in Budapest, just as if he was one of us. I would like to
say thanks to him again for this.
On
the night of 20-21 October, in Szentendre
the local night sport club of MÉSE organized a sports contest on
the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution. Youth
arrived from several Hungarian towns and cities – and we
from Vojvodina – to pay a tribute to the memory of the 1956
Revolution by playing sports for 1956 minutes. The youth could
participate in three sports: table tennis, table football and
basketball (3 times12 hours, that is 36 hours, that is 1956
minutes).
In
the evening we arrive to the site of the night sport championship. Before long
we all took out the bats from our rucksacks and started warming
up. In the hall of the school more and more kids started
to arrive: younger and older, girls and boys alike. This was a
great opportunity for getting acquainted. The organizers were also
very friendly and kind. The part of the competition we took part
in lasted almost until morning (for12 hours), and it was
exhausting for every participant, which showed especially on those
who played basketball. The well-earned rewards were not missing
either, since in the end lots of prizes and presents were
distributed. The top prize at the tombola was a bicycle. The
members of the Moonlight Clubs in Vojvodina won the first prize in
almost every category. The final announcement of results took
place at dawn. In the morning we set out to roam around in the
beautiful old parts of Szentendre. At midday the President of MÉSE
invited us for lunch in an elegant restaurant.
In
the afternoon the time has come to leave for home. On the way home
we talked about the things that had happened to us during the
excursion and at the competition in high spirits. We were proud of
ourselves because we stood this test too. We are very thankful for
the warm welcome that our sister club in Szentendre received us
with, and also to Mr Kiss for organizing this trip for us.
