VALEDICTION
OF THE YEAR 2005
IN THE MOONLIGHT CLUB 1
7
January, 2006
In
December the number of visitors in the Club
was between 20 and 40. As the end of the first school term is
approaching, youngsters are spending more time studying,
especially those who haven’t performed very well during the
term.
This
month we decided together with the trainer,
Josip ©ebeąćen, that we are going to award the first fair play prize. The decision was preceded by a
quite moving event. When the prizes were raffled at the
championship one of the youngsters won an expensive feather coat,
which he offered to his club mates, saying that he already has
one. One of the younger kids accepted it, but not for himself, but
for his mother, who, as he said, hadn’t had one yet. The fair
play prize, which was a smart T-shirt, was given at the next club
night accompanied by the kids’ ovation to the generous boy,
whose sportsmanlike conduct was an example for all of us.
As
the above example suggests, there are more and more donations made
to the Club: a lady who
doesn’t want her name to become known donated items of sports
clothing, the Pelivan confectionery shop supplies us with cakes,
while the Miko baker’s shop with bread. Our non-profit
organisation received for the first time financial donation from
the local government of the town to support the Moonlight
Programme. We also received a considerable financial donation from
a source that wished to remain anonymous.
On
one Friday we invited Marija Horvat, a poet from
Subotica as a guest, who gave some of her books of verse to the
Club to be raffled among the youngsters as prizes.
On
the last Friday night of the year, the 30th of
December we held a small celebration. We said goodbye to the year
2005
and greeted the new year. At the same time we also celebrated the
winter holidays: the Orthodox and Catholic Christmas, the Bairam,
the Hanukkah. This time the kids all paid an „admission”:
everyone had to bring a piece of decoration, a balloon or a
hand-made ornament, with which they decorated the table tennis
hall. The night was spent in a truly festive spirit, and the
prizes raffled were more valuable than usually.
The
Red Cross of Subotica gave a carton of drink chocolate and fruit
yoghurt to every participant as presents.
We also had a special reason for celebrating. The Balcan Community
Initiatives Fund (BCIF) (www.bcif.org) awarded a grant to the Moonlight Programme through
competition. This success is a significant milestone in the
3-month existence of the Club. We can obtain newer and more sports
kit, which the kids have really been looking forward to. The
competition result also means moral support, because it proves
that there is a valid reason to put the Moonlight Programme into
practice, and that this child-friendly conception should not only
be developed further, but also spread out.
